Way too technical for me, but this analysis of crazy-cheap solar power that’s only getting cheaper, much faster than anyone expected, is a nice breeze of positive news amidst, well, everything else.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Storage would seem to be the limiting factor on how effectively solar can replace fossil fuels, but someone will surely solve that problem, and even if not it’s still a big win.
The future is bright. Maybe even bright enough to keep climate change under control.
(No, I’m not that optimistic, but maybe.)

Are you telling me to invest in solar, and buy solar panels? Because I can do that. Solar all the things

Sounds like you should wait 20 years for solar panels to be even cheaper!

Unfortunately the whole Paris Acc ord is something we’re out of time to meet - m aybe if Covid lasts for a decade lol. We can do better but we’re far behind the curve still.
Storage, while a challenge, is being overcome. Obviously there are batteries, but a lot of research is being put into alternative methods. Molten Salt (MSES, commercially used now ), other thermal (TES, graphene/graphite ), hydrogen conversions, and pumped hydro.
The next few years should bring more solar and a lot more wind (mostly offshore installations) online. Natty gas is also a big part of the change. W hile it is a fossil fuel, is cleaner as a power source. Cheap oil drags out the energy transition timeli ne , but it’ s happening regardless.

The more we deploy, the more we California ratepayers get to pay the surrounding states to take the “negative value” solar power away...

Pumped hydro doesn’t sound like it should work, but it’s a great idea that could eliminate the need for batteries.
Good article (with info- graphic) from a few years ago about turning Lake Mead/ Hoover Dam into a battery.

And storage to be more than a Musk reefer burp...
We’re 20-25 years out.

I was always a skeptic (the round trip efficiencies are atrocious) but there are projects on the books around the Great Lakes that could make a lot of sense. And, the TVA might make it work.
California has the biggest problem with too much solar and are trying batteries... but are short of suitable pumped-hydro sites that could work. Plus EIS work in California takes forever.
They talked about draining Powell (silted in) for decades, so maybe it’s time for a pumped hydro re-do there at Page?

Just as a heads up that climate change is already out of control. Ask any antarctic scientist. TBH covid offers a better hope to that problem than anything we are willing to do.
However, I saw a cool article today where biologists have created a GM’d algae that can unbleach coral. Downside is that releasing GMO’s into natural environments is hugely problematic, and very illegal in some places.

T here are several folks in our neighborhood that have put quite big arrays on their roofs, (and we are up in cloudy Seattle.) One guy in particular is kind of a stereotypical trumpster fan and he just put a bunch of money into it - I was really surprised...
